A domain transfer changes the registrar of record. It does not, by itself, move the website files or the mailbox. If the nameservers stay where they are, the site and the email keep resolving the same way they did the day before.
GoPapa is an authorized GoDaddy reseller (partner ID 500766). Checkout is on secureserver.net. Wild West Domains / GoDaddy is the registrar after a transfer into this portal. This page is the “will it break?” question. The five-year cost for ten .com names is a different page.
What keeps running
- Website. The files stay on the host they are on now. A transfer does not upload, download, or rebuild the site.
- Email. Mailboxes stay on the mail host they are on now. MX records do not change unless someone edits DNS.
- Nameservers. A normal transfer leaves them. The option that breaks a live site is choosing new nameservers, or a cart checkbox that replaces DNS, during the transfer.
- Time left on the name. An ICANN transfer adds a year at the reseller rate. It does not reset the registration to zero.
What can interrupt mail or the site
- You change nameservers as part of the transfer.
- The domain expires while the transfer is still pending. Unlock it and start the move before the expiry date.
- The domain is locked, or the auth code is wrong, so the transfer sits and the name then expires.
- You move hosting in the same afternoon and point DNS at the new host before that site is ready.
What to check before you start
- Write down the current nameservers. After the transfer, they should match.
- Unlock the domain at the current registrar and copy the auth code.
- Leave the transfer’s DNS choice on keeping the current nameservers if the site or mail is live.
- Do not let the name expire in the middle of the move.
The ten-name cost article lists the same limit in one section: what a transfer does not do. The worked example is ten .com names over five years. The click-by-click steps are the transfer guide.
One name uses the box. A list uses GoDaddy’s bulk transfer, up to 500 names, with the same partner ID.
